State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC) recently launched 200 hydrogen coaches to provide transport in the Yanqing competition zone of the upcoming Beijing 2022 Olympics.
The hydrogen buses can travel as far as 630 kilometers and be started under temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. Their release of carbon dioxide is estimated at about 70 kilograms less than buses powered by traditional fossil fuel for every 100 kilometers of distance.
SPIC is currently building a Zhongguancun Yanqing Hydrogen Industrial Park. The first two phases – the hydrogen refueling station in Yanqing District, Beijing, and the hydrogen production station for the Winter Olympics – have been completed.
The hydrogen refueling station can refuel 60 buses or 200 medium- and small-sized cars every day, a service that will be available during the Winter Olympics.
Construction of the third phase – the research and development testing zone – is scheduled to start in 2022.
SPIC has been making efforts to develop the hydrogen industry and promote coordinated development of renewable energy-based power generation and hydrogen production by green power.
The company will also boost self-development and mass production of renewable energy–based hydrogen production equipment and battery-related technologies as well as stably push forward innovation and demonstration hydrogen technology projects.
Qian Zhimin, chairman of SPIC, said that the company has shifted to a full industrial chain capacity including hydrogen technology innovation, production and manufacturing and market development. It will join hands with local governments and related enterprises to promote hydrogen demonstration applications and support low-carbon transformation.
