State Grid Launches New Pumped Storage Power Station to Support Beijing 2022

State Grid Corporation of China (State Grid) held a ceremony on Dec 30, 2021 to announce operation of the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station. The station will contribute to safe, reliable, flexible, highly-efficient, green and clean power supply for the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Located in Fengning County, Chengde of North China's Hebei Province, the pumped storage power station is installed with twelve 300,000-kilowatt generator units, giving it an installed capacity of 3.6 million kW, the world's largest.

With a total investment of 19.2 billion yuan ($3.01 billion), the power station not only has the world's largest installed capacity but also sets records for storage capacity, underground powerhouses and underground cavern groups.

The project also realized connection of a flexible DC grid to the pumped storage power station, which is a demonstration of high-quality development of the pumped storage power industry.

The power station is a key project to support the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and to achieve carbon neutrality.

The first two generator units are expected to provide green power to all venues for the Olympics.

Once fully operational, the station will improve flexibility of power regulation capacity in North China, promote development and utilization of new energy in Zhangbei County of Zhangjiakou, guarantee safe and reliable power supply and effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

It will also drive development of the tourism industry and boost employment and local fiscal revenue in affected areas.

So far, State Grid has completed 28 supporting power grid projects for the Olympics.
