Asia's First Offshore Wind Power Flexible DC Transmission Project Put into Full Operation

Updated: 2022-01-18

The Rudong offshore wind power flexible direct current (DC) transmission project in East China's Zhejiang Province went into full operation on Dec 25, 2021.

Designed by Central Southern China Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. of China Power Engineering Consulting Group, an affiliate of China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited, it is the first offshore wind power flexible DC transmission project in Asia and has the world's largest capacity and highest voltage level of any such project.

It was also the first time the flexible DC power transmission technology has been used in China's offshore power transmission.

Jointly invested and built by China Three Gorges Corporation and China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), the project included construction of an offshore converter station, a DC submarine cable line and an onshore converter station.

It collects the 1.1 million kilowatts of power generated by the Rudong H6, H8 and H10 offshore wind farms and transmits it to the onshore converter station through the ±400-kilovolt DC submarine cable, after which the power is sent to the Jiangsu power grid through a 500 kV alternating current (AC) line.

Once operational, the project is expected to transmit 3.3 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually, enough to meet the annual power demand of about 1.4 million households in affected areas.

The power equals that produced by burning 1 million metric tons of standard coal, and an elimination of about 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide.

The project will help improve the level of China's clean energy power infrastructure and serve social and economic development.

The technology will also boost large-scale development of the offshore wind power industry and support the country's low-carbon energy transformation.
