The second phase of the Mendi Battery Storage Project in the UK, the largest grid-side individual battery energy storage plant in Europe, recently broke ground.
Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited, is responsible for design and consultation of the entire project.
Located in Wiltshire in the western part of London, the second phase sits next to the first phase of Mendi Battery Storage Project. With a construction scale of 49.9 megawatts/99.8 megawatt-hours, the second phase project will be installed with a China-made battery storage system.
As a demonstration project of China-UK cooperation in the field of new energy, the second phase project was selected as one of the 18 projects to support the country's green and low-carbon development at the Global Investment Summit.
Once operational, it will be operated and managed together with the first phase project. The two phases are expected to contribute to power grid peak shaving, frequency modulation and other supporting services, which will improve flexibility and security of the British power grid and stabilize operation of the power grid in western London.
The first phase project has an installed capacity of 99.8 MW and was the first 100-MW large-scale battery energy storage project built by a Chinese power enterprise in a developed country. It was put into operation on June 30, 2021.
