World's First Typhoon-Resistant Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Starts Operation

Updated: 2021-12-21

The world's first typhoon-resistant floating offshore wind turbine, based on China's first floating offshore power platform at Yangjiang offshore wind farm in South China's Guangdong Province, went into operation on Dec 7.

Its operation marks that China has taken the lead in mastering independent development, manufacturing, installation and operation capacities of large-capacity typhoon-resistant floating offshore wind turbines, which is highly significant in the country's upgrading of its high-end offshore wind power equipment manufacturing and exploration of deep-sea wind power resources.

Development of the newly-operated wind turbine with a unit installed capacity of 5.5-megawatts was jointly achieved by China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co., Ltd. (CTGR), scientific companies like Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute Co., Ltd. and some Chinese wind turbine manufacturers.

The wind turbine is designed to resist extremely strong waves seen once every 50 years and is able to resist Grade-17 typhoons, new progress in the country's typhoon-resistant technology in offshore wind power development.

The floating offshore wind power technology is expected to develop offshore wind power in deepwater locations.

Compared with traditional wind turbines that are fixed on the seabed, the floating turbines can be installed in deep-sea areas. Stable and high-quality wind power resources in deep water can be obtained without affecting nearshore fisheries and related industrial activities.

The technology has been under development in many countries and regions.

A pioneer in the country's new energy industry, CTGR focuses on high-quality and large-scale development of offshore wind power and intends to support construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system, contributing to China's goal of peaking carbon dioxide emission by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060.
