SOEs & Winter Olympics: CNPC Guarantees Hydrogen Supply to Beijing 2022

Updated: 2021-12-20

High-purity hydrogen produced by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) was sent to the company's Jinlong Comprehensive Energy Station in Yanqing District, Beijing on Dec 6, in readiness to supply clean energy for the upcoming test event of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

In order to enhance hydrogen supply during the Winter Olympics, CNPC built a new hydrogen purification project and completed construction of a hydrogen by-product purification plant capable of producing 500 standard cubic meters of hydrogen per hour.

The plant is now in operation and purity of its hydrogen product exceeds 99.999 percent.

Following the concept of "Green Winter Olympics", CNPC has built an energy pattern with multiple kinds of energy complementing each other. The company also accelerated construction of hydrogen energy research and a guaranteed supply system.

Earlier this year, CNPC opened the hydrogen refueling station at the Taizicheng Service Area in Chongli of Zhangjiakou, North China's Hebei Province, which was the first step taken by the company to ensure hydrogen energy for the Games.

To date, the company has built four hydrogen refueling stations in the Beijing competition area, which are expected to provide 5,500 kilograms of hydrogen per day during the Winter Olympics, enough for nearly 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to travel more than 2 million kilometers.

At present, the total hydrogen production capacity of CNPC exceeds 2.6 million tons per year and hydrogen purification projects are under construction nationwide to realize blue hydrogen supply and meet hydrogen demand in transportation.

Blue hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced from fossil fuels.

CNPC also established a hydrogen energy research institute and joined the China Hydrogen Alliance, aiming to give full play to its basic advantages in the chemical and new material fields in building a diversified hydrogen supply system of blue and green hydrogen, carrying out hydrogen-electricity and electricity-hydrogen conversion, and setting up a supply chain of hydrogen storage, transportation and terminal refueling.
