Updated: 2021-12-14

The AUTO ADVANCE pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), the world's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel, cell hybrid and energy management system (EMS)-equipped vehicle ro-ro ship, was delivered to its buyer on Nov 29.

The ship was designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute and built by Jiangnan Shipyard. Both companies are subsidiaries of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC).

The 169.1-meter-long and 28-meter-wide ship has 10 decks and can carry 3,600 vehicles at one time.

Equipped with a 600-cubic meter C-shaped tank, the ship can be powered with both diesel and LNG and meets International Maritime Organization's TIER III emission standards.

The LNG-powered system, the battery hybrid solution and EMS make the ship outstanding in low carbon and environmentally-friendly performance.

As LNG plays a main role in powering equipment like the main engine, generator and boiler, the ship releases 99 percent, 80 to 85 percent and 20 to 25 percent respectively less sulfur, nitric oxide and carbon than traditional oil-powered PCTC in those functions.

According to CSSC, a second ship of the same type is scheduled to carry out a trial voyage this month and construction of a third one has been completed. The two ships are scheduled for delivery next year.
