Energy China Group Holds Open House at Umm Al Quwain Desalination Project

Updated: 2021-10-28

China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (Energy China Group) recently held an open house event at the Umm Al Quwain independent water 150MIGD project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), showcasing the company applying advanced technology to benefit local people.

Located at the coastal site of the Persian Gulf, the project has the world's second-largest membrane process seawater desalination plant and is one of the top five seawater desalination projects in the world.

The project uses an advanced membrane process desalination method that requires 20 percent less power than other seawater desalination methods, making it a world-leading energy conservation project.

During the event, a civil engineer demonstrated the central electrical building and the reverse osmosis area in the workshop and explained how the project protects marine ecology as well as how the membrane technique works.

As a key project under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, the project is involved in the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, intending to ensure sustainable access to water during normal and emergency conditions.

It set an example of multi-lateral cooperation between China, Saudi Arabia, France, the UAE and Germany in technology, finance and construction.

Once operational, the project is expected to turn 680,000 cubic meters of seawater into fresh water per day, benefiting 2.2 million residents in the UAE.
