Updated: 2021-10-20

Construction of the main body of the Lusail Stadium in Doha, the main venue of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, was recently completed as the last roof membrane structure was installed.

Located about 15 kilometers north of Doha, capital of Qatar, the Lusail Stadium, covering 190,000 square meters, can hold more than 92,000 spectators, the second-most of any professional football pitch in the world. It is also the world's most complicated cable-membrane structure building with the longest span.

The tournament's closing ceremony, as well as its semifinal and the final matches, will be held there.

It is the first main venue for World Cup that was contracted by a Chinese enterprise and the largest China-built overseas professional venue with the largest spectator capacity.

China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) is responsible for the project.

With arrangement of CRCC, 110 large-scale subcontracting enterprises in 15 countries and more than 4,600 builders participated in the project.

Cutting-edge technologies like Building Information Modeling (BIM) were used to simulate the full life span of the architecture and realize multi-dimensional information collection to ensure a sound filming and viewing experience for spectators.

CRCC will continue to be in charge of maintenance of the venue during the World Cup, which will be the first time a Chinese enterprise will take charge of sports venue operation and maintenance in a large competition organized by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
