China Launches Development of World's First Carbon 14 Target

Updated: 2021-10-12

Development of the world's first carbon 14 target for commercial use was recently launched by the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

The carbon 14 radionuclide is often used in helicobacter pylori detection, new drug development and PM2.5 detection.

China's only cradle for cobalt-60, the Qinshan Nuclear Power Base, will make full use of its cobalt-60 production technology and provide enough industrial and medical cobalt sources and carbon 14 radionuclides to fully support carbon 14 technology development.

According to CNNC, the first carbon 14 target will be installed in the reactor in 2022, which is expected to improve CNNC's competitiveness in the isotope field and will promote the development of China's nuclear technology application industry.
