China General Nuclear Power Group released a report on biodiversity conservation on Oct 11 ahead of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, or COP 15, which is being held in Kunming, Southwest China's Yunnan province, from Oct 11 to 15.

According to the report on biodiversity conservation, total natural capital benefits of the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, jointly built by CGN and EDF more than 30 years ago, which was also the first large-scale commercial plant on the Chinese mainland, reached 424.49 billion yuan from 1994 to 2019.

Natural capital usually refers to the elements of the natural environment that provide valuable goods and services to people. Usually consisting of natural capital assets, including water, forests and clean air, natural capital is also a way of thinking about nature as a stock that provides a flow of benefits to people and the economy.

According to company spokesperson Yuan Changhong, the company will continuously stick to the principle of developing clean energy in an effective way while ensuring biological diversity.

The company reported more than 263 billion kilowatt hours of on-grid power of clean energy last year, which is equivalent to the reduction of nearly 210 million tons of carbon dioxide, he said.
