The new Port of Haifa in Israel went into service on Sept 1.

Located in the port city of Haifa, the port will be a major traffic and industrial center in northern Israel and a railway hub for areas along the Mediterranean Sea. It will play a key role in international shipping and act as a major port along the Belt and Road trade route.

Construction of the port was divided into two phases. The first phase included construction of a 805.5-meter frontage capable of handling 1.06 million twenty-feet equivalent units (TEU) every year, while the second phase saw the construction of a 715.7-meter frontage that can handle 800,000 TEUs.

China Construction Harbour and Channel Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), was responsible for the first phase.

The project is the first large port to go into service in the country in the last 60 years. It is the most advanced and environmentally-friendly port on the eastern bank of the Mediterranean Sea.

Upon operation, it will become Israel's largest container terminal and will provide highly-efficient logistics services for Israel and neighboring regions.

In addition, it will support trade between the Port of Shanghai in China and other ports along the Maritime Silk Road and evolve into a major trade hub to export Chinese goods to Europe.
