CSSC Delivers New VLC Vessel to CMA CGM

Updated: 2021-09-03

The first 15,000TEU very large container (VLC) built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. for the French corporation CMA CGM was recently named CMA CGM ZEPHYR and delivered to its buyer.

The vessel is as long as a 14-carriage Fuxing bullet train and five A380 aircraft and has a deck as large as three standard football pitches. Its total height equals that of a 24-story building.

It is capable of carrying 15,536 standard containers or 1,800 refrigerated containers.

Equipped with the exhaust gas scrubbing combination of a desulfurization tower and low-pressure denitrification facilities, the vessel meets the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emission standard, as demanded by the buyer.

It is the first time in the world that a selective catalytic reduction denitrification unit and a mixed scrubbing tower are installed on a VLC vessel.

The vessel also follows requirements of the third stage of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for ships and has advantages in economic efficiency, carrying capacity and fuel consumption.

Both Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. are subsidiaries of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC).
