Construction of the fifth phase of the Tarbela hydropower plant project in Pakistan recently started.
Located about 113 kilometers northwest of Islamabad, capital city of Pakistan, the plant is currently the largest of its kind in the country.
The fifth phase of the project has a water in-take, steel pressure pipes, workshops, a tail water culvert, a tailrace and a switching station.
Sinohydro Bureau 7 Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), was responsible for the construction of the plant's three 470-megawatt mixed flow hydropower generator units.
Upon completion, the total installed capacity of the Tarbela hydropower plant will reach 6,298 MW, accounting for 25 percent of the country's total installed power capacity.
Once operational, the plant will create more than 3,000 jobs and provide stable irrigation water for local people.
The plant is expected to relieve local water shortages, meet people's water demands and improve clean energy utilization in the country.
