Key Railway Section Breaks Ground in Nigeria

Updated: 2021-08-02

Construction of the Kaduna-Kano Railway in Nigeria began on July 15.

The 204-kilometer railway will be a main section of the Lagos-Kano Railway, a key part of Nigeria's "three vertical and five horizontal" trunk railway network, and will connect to the Abuja-Kaduna Railway in the South upon completion.

Once operational, the section is expected to contribute to the development of the Kano-Kaduna-Abuja economic corridor and the improvement of the country's railway transport capacity.

In the future, a comprehensive railway network is to be established in the country with the connection of the Kaduna-Kano Railway with other major railways, such as the planned Ibadan-Abuja Railway and the Lagos-Ibadan Railway already in operation.

By then, a South-to-North line linking Lagos and Kano will have taken shape, becoming the main engine to the national economic growth.

The line is also expected to benefit the sustainable development of industrialization along the railroad and play a role in social and cultural exchange within the country.

China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation will be responsible for the construction of the Kaduna-Kano Railway.
