China Telecom Launches World's First 5G Fusion Application Open Lab

Updated: 2021-07-30

China Telecom Corporation Limited (China Telecom), together with its partners, announced the launch of 5G OpenLab, the world's first 5G fusion application open laboratory, in Beijing on July 16.

The lab is expected to provide a testing and verification platform for 5G-based industries, help with technological innovation and product development and play an important role as an incubator and center that offers commercial solutions to various industrial sectors.

With low latency, greater bandwidth, extensive coverage and robust linkages, 5G technology has been widely used in many fields, particularly those within a strictly-controlled industrial production environment.

In detail, terminal equipment calls for different requirements to connect to a 5G network and devices like mechanic arms, PLC control modules and AGVs have different latency needs, stability and upload bandwidth requirements. Therefore, an end-to-end testing and verification platform is needed urgently to link 5G with applications and to assess the network's efficacy,

The platform will also help test compatibility between a specific application and the 5G network, edge computing and the cloud.

As for 5G scenarios that are already in operation and contributing to industrial production, the lab will be a platform to comb through their common advantages and work out a repeatable solution to service the digital transformation of the industry as a whole.

5G is a representative of the new generation of information technologies. They are playing an increasingly important role in traditional industries, improving enterprises' digital capacity and boosting industrial digitalization.

Based on the newly-launched 5G OpenLab, China Telecom will kick off its research into its 5G customized network products, simulation verification of solutions based on a self-operated core technology, and commence exploration of future networks, like 6G.

Meanwhile, the company will deepen cooperation with enterprises across a broad spectrum of industries to build a convergent, open and win-win approach to improving 5G industrial modernization and contributing to China's industrial digitalization.
