World's First Typhoon-Proof Floating Offshore Wind Power Generator Unit Installed in South China

Updated: 2021-07-29

The world's first typhoon-proof floating offshore wind power generator was installed at the 1 million-kilowatt Yangjiang Shapa Offshore Wind Farm in South China's Guangdong Province on July 13.

Led by China Three Gorges Renewables (Group) Co., Ltd., development of the 5.5-megawatt generator unit was jointly shouldered by scientific institutes and domestic wind turbine manufacturers.

It represents a milestone in the manufacturing and upgrading of advanced offshore wind power equipment in China and is expected to contribute to the development of the country's offshore wind power resource.

Floating offshore wind power has been widely regarded as the main technology to develop deep and open sea wind power in the future and has been highlighted in many countries and regions.

Compared to traditional wind power generator units that are fixed along coastal areas, the floating units are mainly settled in deep and open sea, which will not impact fishery and aquatic breeding or navigation and related industries while obtaining a stable and high-quality wind power resource.
