The first 120.2 tons of soybeans purchased by COFCO Corporation (COFCO) from Tanzania recently entered China. It was the first time that China imported soybeans from Tanzania.
The two countries signed the protocol of phytosanitary requirements for the export of soybeans in October 2020, signaling that Tanzania had obtained permission to export soybeans to China.
COFCO launched negotiations with Tanzanian soybean suppliers soon after the protocol's signing, which created a new channel to import non-genetically modified organism (non-GMO) soybeans.
Responding to China's 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative, COFCO has established soybean trade relationships with Benin, Ethiopia and Tanzania, aiming to make full use of domestic and overseas markets and resources and guarantee a sufficient supply of non-GMO soybeans.
