HBIS Group Xuansteel Company (Xuansteel) held a ceremony on May 10 to unveil construction of a hydrogen development and utilization demonstration project.
Contracted by Sinosteel Group Corporation Limited (Sinosteel), it is the world's first such project.
Its beginning is a key step for Sinosteel and Xuansteel to transform from traditional carbon metallurgy to hydrogen metallurgy development.
Signed on March 20, the project is supported by the core technology provided by Sinosteel's strategic partner Tenova.
Innovative technology and process are to be used in the project to lower carbon emissions by 60 percent annually upon completion.
Xuansteel and Sinosteel also agreed to make full use of the national renewable energy demonstration zone in Zhangjiakou, North China's Hebei Province, to build a hydrogen reduction project at a scale larger than the hydrogen metallurgy one.
Sinosteel started development of such cutting-edge technologies as low-carbon metallurgy, short process and hydrogen steelmaking when China signed the Paris Agreement on climate change in 2016.
Two direct reduction iron projects, the TOSYALI Algeria short process low-carbon comprehensive steel plant and the Algeria-Qatar direct reduction iron project, the world's largest of their kind, were built by Sinosteel and are currently in operation.
Sinosteel also won the bidding for a green and low-carbon short process steel plant project in Bolivia.
