First Overseas Hualong One Nuclear Reactor Connects to Grid

Updated: 2021-03-24

The Karachi K2 generator unit in Pakistan, China's first overseas Hualong One nuclear reactor, went into operation on March 18 this year, the 70th anniversary of the establishment of China-Pakistan diplomatic relations.

A milestone of China's third generation nuclear power technology and a major result of nuclear power cooperation between China and Pakistan, the beginning of operations deepens the China-Pakistan all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.

Once operable, the generator unit is expected to produce nearly 10 billion kWh of power annually, meeting annual power demands of 1 million population for daily use and production.

Such power equals that produced by burning 3.12 million tons of standard coal, and eliminates 8.16 million tons of carbon dioxide.

What's more, the project has driven development of relevant industries and created more than 10,000 jobs in Pakistan, driving development of local livelihoods and the economy.
