Wang Dujuan: Boosting Underground Space Development

Updated: 2021-03-10

Strong advanced equipment development and manufacturing and safe and highly-efficient engineering are keys to rapid development of underground space construction.

Wang Dujuan, NPC deputy and chief engineer of China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd., has been keeping an eye on normalization of the major rail transit equipment industry and on how to expand access for service manufacturers to get involved in the engineering market.

Focused on innovation-driven development, China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. launched cooperation with enterprises along the industrial chain in the field.

However, disordered competition has limited independent innovation of advanced domestic equipment because of a lack of a unified industrial standard, which also hindered development of an international brand.

Wang explained that there are more than 10 kinds of tunnel segments in China and nearly 10 types of large diameter shields. The segment models and tunnel boring machines (TBMs) cannot be generally used in different projects, which results in repeated investment in the same kinds of development.

Therefore, it is necessary to normalize size and specification of the segments.

Wang also suggested improving service manufacturers' involvement in the engineering field to provide an integrated solution of manufacturing and service.

She explained that expanding market access of such manufacturers and support manufacturers under general contract certification will drive development of the manufacturing service industry, which will improve competitiveness of China's manufacturing.

According to Wang, China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. has been focusing on comprehensive underground engineering machinery service.

It has developed several milestone pieces of equipment, like the world's first U-shaped TBM, its largest-diameter hard rock TBM and its largest-diameter rectangle TBM. So far, the products have been exported to 23 countries and regions including Singapore, Italy, France, Denmark and Australia.
