CNNC Successfully Installs Thermal Shield of Artificial Sun Fusion Reactor

Updated: 2021-01-20

The lower cryostat thermal shield was installed over the dewar-structured base of the artificial sun fusion reactor of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) organization on Jan 14 local time.

One of the top three components of ITER's project, the thermal shield is the first component of its kind to be installed onto the artificial sun fusion reactor.

With a diameter of 20 meters, a height of five meters and a weight of 50 tons, the thermal shield consists of 18 panels with silver surfaces. They are large in size but light in weight.

The thermal shield protects the superconducting magnet from high-temperature components.

The hoisting was contracted by the Sino-French consortium led by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) and lays a foundation for smooth progress of the ITER project.
