Construction of Supporting Power Grid Project for Beijing 2022 Completed

Updated: 2021-01-04

The 110kV power transmission project of Beijing's Capital Gymnasium went into operation on Dec 21, bringing the supporting power grid project for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games to a close.

The project was built and will be operated by State Grid Beijing Electric Power Company, a subsidiary of State Grid Corporation of China (State Grid). The company, together with State Grid Jibei Electric Power Company, will continue to assure reliable power supply for the event.

State Grid Beijing Electric Power Company essentially completed a command platform on Dec 18 that will guarantee power operations during the Winter Olympics. It is now under adjustment and improvement.

The 110kV power transmission project is the last of the 12 supporting power projects for the Winter Games to go into operation. The other 11 include four 500kV, two 220kV and five 110kV power projects in Yanqing and other related districts.

Staging a green event has been highly valued. Venues for the event are designed to be powered completely by clean energy.

For example, the Zhangbei flexible direct current (DC) power grid in Zhangjiakou, North China's Hebei province, went into operation on June 29.

Linking the new energy base in Zhangbei county, the Fengning energy storage base in Chengde of Hebei and the Beijing load center, the power line is expected to transfer about 14 billion kWh of power annually and to greatly increases clean power supply in Beijing while meeting the power demands of the Winter Games' venues.

What's more, State Grid Beijing Electric Power Company has been in full swing in smart charging pile construction. So far, it has built 12 charging stations and 383 charging piles for new energy vehicles in affected areas of the venues for the Winter Games.

The company also built China's first 480kW group charging and control demonstration station at the Banquan service area of the highway between Yanqing in Beijing and Chongli in Hebei. The station has much higher charging efficiency than traditional ones.

State Grid Jibei Electric Power Company participated in planning and construction of five supporting power projects for the Winter Games.

Two 10kV switch stations in Chongli went into service on Nov 3, marking completion of the 10kV supporting power grid project in the region.

The company has made full preparation to ensure safe and stable operation of main devices for the Winter Games.
