Xiamen bridge, China's first cross-strait highway bridge, opens to traffic on Dec 19, 1991

China's first cross-strait highway bridge — Xiamen bridge — opened to traffic on Dec 19, 1991.

With the three sections of the Gaoqi approach Road, a cross-strait main bridge and the Jimei Interchange, the 6,695-meter four-lane bridge has a 2070-meter main body.

Recognized as "the first bridge crossing over a strait", the bridge was contributed to by many enterprises including China Communications Construction Company Limited and China Railway Construction Corporation Limited.

Many technological innovations were created during its construction, which laid foundations for the future construction of cross-sea bridges and tunnels.
