A ceremony was held to announce the first operations of the Nairobi inland container depot in Kenya on Dec 16, 2017.

Contracted by China Communications Construction Company Limited, the depot was a supporting facility of the Kenya railway project.

West of the Nairobi station, the termination of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, and about 3.5 kilometers away from the station's central area, the depot greatly improves competitiveness of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway and the Mombasa Port, consolidates Kenya's situation as the logistics hub in East Africa and plays a role in promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative into more African countries.

A major national project, the line is the first unmanned subway line with proprietary intellectual property rights in the country.

The adoption of a fully-automated system can improve the safety and efficiency of the urban mass transit system as the trains will be able to automatically start, depart, stop and open and close doors by themselves.
