Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, the first to be self-designed and constructed by China, starts operation on Dec 15, 1991

The first self-designed and constructed nuclear power station in the Chinese mainland, Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, went into operation on Dec 15, 1991.

China National Nuclear Corporation is the holding company of the plant which is called the birthplace of China's nuclear power.

A total of 1.5 billion kWh of electricity per year can be produced when the plant is at full power, which relieves power shortages in eastern China.

The plant was an icon of the arrival of China's nuclear power technology at a matured stage. At that point, the country became the seventh in the world capable of independently designing and constructing a nuclear power station after the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union, Canada and Sweden.
