The Sanmenxia hydro project finished diversion on Dec 9, 1958.

The first large-scale hydro project mainly used for flood control, the project was contributed to by many enterprises including Power Construction Corporation of China and Harbin Electric Corporation.

With a control catchment area of 688,400 sq km, the project has a total installed capacity of 420,000 kW, earning it the title of "the first dam over the Yellow River".

Due to its complete flood prevention system involving a dam, reservoir and river way as well as diversion and detention measures, flood control in the downstream of the Yellow River was improved when the hydro project went into service.
