Construction of the Vientiane-Kunming section, part of the China-Laos Railway in Laos, began on Dec 2, 2015.

Many Chinese enterprises including China Railway Group Limited and Power Construction Corporation of China, participated in the project.

Starting from the border of China and Laos in the North and terminating at Vientiane, capital of Laos, the 414-kilometer line has a designed speed of 160 kilometers per hour.

The first overseas railway mainly invested by the Chinese side, and co-operated by both countries' companies, the line was built to Chinese standards with China-made facilities.

It is expected to drive Laos' economic and social development, improve transportation efficiency and create jobs in affected areas.

In addition, the railway will bring new economic growth to southwestern China and can be linked with railways in countries like Thailand and Malaysia.
