CNCEC Contributes to Poverty Alleviation in Gansu

Updated: 2020-11-30

China National Chemical Engineering Group Corporation Ltd (CNCEC) has been focusing on helping poverty-stricken laborers work for themselves since it shouldered poverty alleviation in Huanxian county in Qingyang, Northwest China's Gansu province.

For example, CNCEC built Huanxian's first traditional Chinese medicinal herb poverty-alleviation workshop in Helianwan village, which was a start of CNCEC's one base plus three platforms model in poverty alleviation.

Herb growing demonstration base

The company encouraged about 500 households to grow herbs in the base by signing growing contracts, opening technical training courses and promising purchases.

Now, each household has about 20 mu (1.33 hectares) land of herbs and their annual earnings exceed 20,000 yuan ($3,046).

The operation of the workshop encouraged the development of the herb industry in the northern area of the county where there was no traditional Chinese medicine enterprise and encouraged herb growing in surrounding areas.

Integrated herb purchase, processing, sales platform

Central state-owned enterprises and private firms have joined hands in building a comprehensive poverty-alleviation platform integrating purchasing, processing and selling of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs in the workshop.

The platform provides investment to construct plants and the plants foster technical skills to guarantee operation.

The village collective holds 8 percent of the platform's shares, which means that the village can have a bonus of nearly 150,000 yuan annually.

Herb promotion platform

Huanxian is a traditional Chinese herb growing base and has primarily formed a diversified growing structure with the support of the local government.

So far, villagers in 18 villages and towns of the county grow 15 kinds of herbs on the farm in a 60,000 mu area.

The workshop has effectively widened marketing channels of high-quality herbs and has evolved into an indispensable promotion platform.

In 2020, the workshop purchased 1,000 tons of Chinese herbs and processed and sold 350 tons of medicinal herbs valued at 16 million yuan.

The workshop has also entered a herb supply contract with a Tianjin–based pharmaceutical company. Herb products produced in the workshop also obtained export certification from Japan's TSUMURA Co., Ltd.

Employment platform

As there are about 535 relocated residents of 90 households living in the Helianwan resettlement area, the workshop was built only 100 meters from the area to make it easier for the poverty-stricken people to work there.

There are about 100 local people working in the workshop and each of them has an annual income of about 20,000 yuan.
