CRCC Plays Role in Boosting Freight Transport in East Africa

Updated: 2020-11-24

Renovation of the Tanzania's 985-kilometer Central Railway Line, a meter-gage railway, was completed as the closing of the first two sections in phase I on Nov 16.

Construction of the Central Railway Line started in 1888 and ever since the line has become a main transport passage in East Africa.

A major part of the region's railway network, the railway plays a crucial role in exports for inland countries including Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and helps to promote local economic development.

Its renovation, contracted by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, is expected to improve stability and security of the railway and advance transport capacity.
