CSG Issues World's First White Paper on Digital Grid

China Southern Power Grid (CSG) issued the world's first white paper on its digital grid at the 2020 China Southern Power Grid International Technical Forum on Nov 13.

As a power company operating the world's most complicated alternating and direct current network, CSG's digital grid is a new model of power grid development that integrates advanced digital technology with the business of power supply.

The digital grid is a new energy ecosystem based on new generation digital technologies such as cloud computing, big data, the internet of things, the mobile internet, artificial intelligence and block chain.

For example, CSG recently launched its first digital twin substation in South China's Hainan province, the 220 kV Dayingshan.

It is a simulated twin image built by integrating data of various kinds of substation facilities. The performance of the substation as well as analysis and prediction of its problems and even accurate operation can be realized by computers.

So far, a great number of data transducers are being installed on the power grid devices, which will result in a digital twin grid and greatly improve the facility's efficiency.

According to the white paper, the digital grid will also contribute to opening and cooperation, mutual benefit and coordinative innovation between parties involved.

CSG is working on the construction of the secondary node of the identity resolution of the national industrial Internet and will connect to its top node.

Upon completion, equipment manufacturers of CSG will be capable of upgrading power devices by tracing their performance.

CSG is now cooperating with 252 upstream and downstream suppliers and logistics providers on real-time connectivity and data sharing.

The white paper also says that digital technology plays a role in accurate prediction of renewable energy output and power supply load to balance supply and demand of distributed energy and improve consumption of renewable energy.

The theory has been put into practice in South China's Guangdong province. A project integrating energy consumption revolution, internet technology and smart energy utilization has been launched in Zhuhai.

Power facilities including photovoltaic plates on the roofs of 439 households, two electrochemical energy storage stations, two wind power stations and 1,316 charging piles have been connected to the smart digital energy operation and management platform.

All the power sources are flexibly allocated to balance power supply in the city thanks to the digital grid.
