China's Deepsea Manned Submersible Dives 10,909 Meters into Mariana Trench

Updated: 2020-11-17

Fendouzhe, or Striver, China's deepsea manned submersible, dove 10,909 meters to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean on Nov 10.

A major technological triumph of China's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), the deepsea manned submersible was primarily developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC).

The TAN SUO YI HAO offshore support vessel and the TAN SUO ER HAO guarding vessel participated in the diving trial.

The former used to be the multi-functional vessel named HAI YANG SHI YOU 299 and was later renovated into the mother ship for the manned submersible operated by CSSC's Guangzhou Wenchong Dockyard Co., Ltd.

With a displacement of 6,250 tons, the ship is 94.45 meters long and 17.9 meters wide and can travel more than 10,000 nautical miles.

The ship contributed this June to the deepest dive record set by China's unmanned submersible Haidou-1.

TAN SUO ER HAO was renovated from an ocean engineering vessel. The ship displaces 6,700 tons and is 87.2 meters long and 18.8 meters wide. Its construction started in December 2018 and was completed this June.

Equipped with two rudder propellers and two bow thrusters, the ship is completely powered by electricity. It can travel more than 15,000 sea miles and carry a full crew of 60.

Last but not least, the surface support system for the scientific research was completely developed by CSSC and was the first of its kind in China. The system will play a significant role in China's marine research and strategic security.
