Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region section of Lanzhou-Urumqi High-speed Railway opens to traffic on Nov 16, 2014

The section of the Lanzhou-Urumqi High-speed Railway in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the region's first high-speed railway, opened to traffic on Nov 16, 2014.

Its operation brought northwestern China into the high-speed railway era.

Many enterprises including China Railway Group Limited, China Railway Construction Corporation Limited and China Communications Construction Company Limited contributed to the project.

The Xinjiang section has five stations -- Urumqi South, Turpan North, Shanshan North, Tuha and Hami.

Travel time between the two terminals of the section was reduced by two hours when the railway opened.

The Lanzhou-Urumqi High-speed Railway, the first to be built in high altitude plateau in China, has the longest length built in one continuous period of any high-speed railway anywhere in the world.
