Three Gorges Dam succeeds in Yangtze River diversion on Nov 8, 1997
The Three Gorges Dam succeeded in diverting Yangtze River waters on Nov 8, 1997.
The Three Gorges Dam was more difficult to construct than most other hydropower projects. Builders had to erect two cofferdams on the main riverbed of the Yangtze River as bases for the dam and the power plant. To construct them they had to divert the river, which they successfully did on the above date.
Three Gorges has been regarded as a giant project worldwide because of its large scale, installed capacity and comprehensive benefits. It was also the largest engineering project since the founding of the People's Republic of China.
