Construction of Nansha-Zhongshan Highway Begins

Construction of the highway linking Nansha district of Guangzhou and Zhongshan in South China's Guangdong province got underway on Oct 26 as work began on the main offshore pier of the Hongqimen bridge.

With a total investment of more than 20 billion yuan ($2.98 billion), the 32.4-kilometer highway has three independent grand bridges and 41 other bridges.

The highway is a main part of the ultra-large bridge and cross-Pearl River traffic system in the core area of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and is connected with the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge that stretches across the Pearl River Delta region.

Contracted by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited, the highway is scheduled to be completed in 2024, the same year set for completion of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge.

Once operable, a Y-shaped road network will be formed that connects Nansha in the north, Zhuhai in the south, Zhongshan in the west and Shenzhen in the east.
