Construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway by China Railway Group Limited (CRECG) and China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) started on Oct 28, 1970, with assistance from China.

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway is China's largest foreign aid complete project, with a total length of 1,860 kilometers, including about 960 kilometers in Tanzania and 884 kilometers in Zambia.

The construction was very arduous with 320 bridges and 26 tunnels being built through deep mountain valleys and swamps.

Since opening to traffic, the Tanzania-Zambia Railway has made a major contribution to the social and economic development of Tanzania and Zambia and the national liberation struggle in southern Africa.
