Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge opens to traffic on Oct 23, 2014

The opening ceremony of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province on Oct 23, 2014, marking that it had started service.

The bridge was jointly constructed by many enterprises including China Communications Construction Company Limited, China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, China Railway Group Limited, China State Construction Engineering Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, China Southern Power Grid, China Telecommunications Corporation, China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd., China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd and China Tower Corporation Limited.

The first large-scale cross-sea traffic engineering under cooperation of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao pursuant to the "one country, two systems" policy, the bridge is the world's longest and was the most difficult of its kind to build.

It is the largest steel structure in the world and has the longest immersed tunnel distance and the longest lifespan. It is also the most advanced bridge with the most number of scientific patents.

The 55-kilometer bridge, integrating bridge, tunnel and connecting island sections, shortens travel time between the three regions. It is proof of China's bridge construction progress.
