China Unicom Promotes Poverty Alleviation from All Aspects

China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd. (China Unicom) in East China's Jiangxi province is making full use of its advantages and helped with poverty alleviation by building information infrastructure, developing local industries and promoting agricultural products.

China Unicom in Jiangxi has directly provided more than 40 million yuan ($5.95 million) for poverty-stricken villages and invested 642 million yuan in internet coverage as of the first half of this year.

It has also purchased local agricultural products valued at more than 5 million yuan in the first half year.

In addition, together with local governments and social departments it developed local industries and promoted sale of agricultural products, benefiting nearly 100,000 poor people.

Building the road of information

Figuring out the roots of poverty and the demands of poverty-stricken families is key to high-quality poverty alleviation.

As a telecommunication operator, China Unicom used its advantages to promoted internet infrastructure construction in remote rural areas.

In 2019, 2,263 villages were covered with 4G internet and the number is to be 2,416 by the end of 2020.

What's more, the company introduced internet information technology to poverty-stricken villages and households to improve poverty-alleviation management.

It also joined hands with the local government and helped renovate fiber optical communication technology in Changle village in Jiangxi, installing 12 video surveillance cameras.

Developing local industries

Following the model of forward-purchasing orders, deep processing enterprises and plantation and breeding cooperatives, China Unicom in Jiangxi worked together with local governments to promote industrial development.

The agaric planting and chicken breeding industries in Changle, aquiculture in Yongxin county and organic fruits in Fuliang county are now well developed thanks to the support of the company and the governments.

Promoting agricultural products

Taking advantage of its online operation experience, China Unicom in Jiangxi launched livestreaming to promote local agricultural products and helped to sell goods through its e-commerce platform. Adding those purchased by the company itself, agricultural products sold were valued at about 4 million yuan.
