Major Infrastructure Project in GBA Makes Progress

Updated: 2020-10-14

Drilling of tunnels through the Heimian and Baimian Jiangjun mountains in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is now in full swing.

Jointly contracted by China Railway Construction Investment Group Co., Ltd., China Railway 18th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., both subsidiaries of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, and Zhuhai Da Heng Qin Company Limited, the north-south tunnels are main parts of the third passage linking Hengqin and other regions.

With a fracture surface as large as 257.25 square meters, the four tunnels are 3,860 meters long with six lanes.

As the tunnels are close to supportive towers of the high-voltage power supply lines, their engineering is quite difficult and special technological skills including smooth blasting and pre-splitting blasting are being used to guarantee safe construction and lower impact on the towers.

In addition, the builders highly value environmental protection during engineering to ensure zero-pollution of water resources, which is important as the tunnels go through two water sources for Macao – the Shedikeng and the Nanping reservoir protection areas.

The project is scheduled to have dug 2,800 meters by the end of this year, 40 percent of the construction, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

Connecting to the Nanqin Road in the tariff-free zone and Zhuhai Avenue in Xiangzhou district of Zhuhai to the north, the tunnels will contribute to development of Hengqin and improve the area’s involvement in construction of the GBA.
