The Tarim Desert Highway, China's first in a drifting desert, opened to traffic on Oct 4, 1995.

Constructed by China National Petroleum Corporation, the 522-kilometer highway crosses the Taklamakan Desert from south to north.

The expressway greatly shortens the transportation distance between southern and northern areas of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

It not only contributes to oil and gas exploration and development in the Tarim Basin, but also plays an important role in promoting regional economic growth.
