The West-to-East natural gas transmission project was launched on Oct 1, 2004.

Contracted by China National Petroleum Corporation, the project is an icon of China's Western Development Program.

The pipeline passes Shanghai and the Xinjiang Uygur and Ningxia Hui autonomous regions as well as Gansu, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

It was the first long-distance and high-pressure large diameter gas transmission pipeline in the world and was constructed to the highest steel requirement in China at that time.

The pipeline continues to play a significant role in adjusting the country's energy structure and improving its environment.
