Track Pavement of Grand Bridge of Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway Underway

Updated: 2020-09-24

Track laying of the third grand bridge of the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway in Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region spanning the Yarlung Zangbo River started on Sept 20.

Contracted by China Railway 11 Bureau Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, the bridge now being paved is 525.1 meters long with a main span of 430 meters.

So far, 168 kilometers of the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway has been paved, bringing the railway one step closer to operational status, which is scheduled for 2021.

A major project of China's 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), the 435-kilometer railway, with a designed speed of 160 kilometers per hour, is the first electrified railway in Tibet.

As the railway is built in complicated geological conditions, about 75 percent of its sections are bridges and tunnels. What's more, it crosses the Yarlung Zangbo River 16 times, adding to the difficulty of construction.
