Updated: 2020-09-24

United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) held its Board Meeting online on Sept. 11, 2020. UN Secretary-General António Guterres attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Ren Hongbin, Vice Chairman of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), the only UNGC Board member from China, participated in the meeting and made recommendations.

Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of UNGC, outlined the management of the organization in the second quarter of 2020 and her understanding of UNGC since taking office this June. Guterres highly praised to the work of UNGC and proposed certain top priorities, such as achieving fair globalization, addressing inequality, promoting free trade, etc., for which he hoped that enterprises would play an active role in pushing government to constantly improve governance and promote multilateralism and post-epidemic economic recovery.

Ren made recommendations for UNGC's future work. First, advocate and engage with governments to provide a level playing field and fair access for business everywhere to invest and contribute with technologies and innovations without discrimination. Second, prioritize key regions and countries to invest and expand presence, in particular Africa and Asia. Third, spearhead the advocacy among business communities for inclusion, diversity, equality and collaboration, against isolation, racism, confrontation and hatred. Fourth, guide business to participate in initiatives promoting dialogue, understanding, cooperation and peace, such as Access to COVID-19 Tools-Accelerator launched by the World Health Organization and the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, in order to achieve a better and stronger recovery together.
