The Water Strategic Mega Reservoirs project in Qatar was recently approved by Guinness World Records as the world's largest drinking water storage tank.
Contracted by China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC), a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (Energy China Group), the reservoir is 300 meters long, 150 meters wide and 12 meters high, and has a water storage capacity of about 436,600 cubic meters.
It is expected to improve the country's strategic water safety.
Located in a tropical desert climate region, Qatar has little rainfall and is extremely short of fresh water. However, fresh water demand is growing for industry, production and daily life as the economy rapidly develops.
To meet the demand, the country initiated the water storage project which includes sea water desalination as well as water storage and transmission.
Upon completion, the water in the reservoir will be enough to meet the needs of the country for seven days.
It will also provide clean water for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
According to CGGC, the No. 1 and No. 2 water tanks went into operation respectively on Feb 20 and July 27 this year.
