The Huizhou 21-1, China's first offshore oil field to produce a million tons of crude annually, went into operation on Sept 13, 1990.

Its operation was proof that the exploration, development and production in the east of the South China Sea had entered a new stage.

Several oil fields in the Pearl River mouth basin have been developed with cooperation between China National Offshore Oil Corporation and foreign oil companies since the 1980s.

Located 160 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong, Huizhou 21-1 was China's first platform able to produce 30,000 buckets (about 4,000 tons) of crude per day and a million tons annually.
