Planting of the turf for the Lusail Stadium, the main venue of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, was recently started by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC).
Turf is a crucial part of a football pitch and can affect a match's outcome.
Considering Qatar's climate and following requirements of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), platinum finches barnyard grass was selected as the turf to plant.
The grass is fine and smooth and has strong roots, giving it outstanding performance in resisting stomping and strong recovery capacity.
What's more, the grass can be irrigated by sea water or recycled water, which makes it appropriate for tropical and subtropical zones like Qatar.
Seeding, sand overlaying and irrigation were carried out during evenings, which avoided any impact from local high temperatures.
As for the Lusail Stadium, it was the first professional football pitch built to FIFA's highest standards that was designed and constructed by a Chinese enterprise.
It is also the largest stadium of its kind with the largest spectator capacity built by a Chinese enterprise overseas.
The tournament's closing ceremony, as well as its semifinal and the final matches, will be held there.
