China Telecom Supports Medical Poverty Alleviation in Xinjiang

Updated: 2020-08-12

The 5G-based telemedicine platform has been playing a significant role in medical diagnoses in remote areas from distant municipal hospitals in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

On July 26, a doctor at the People's Hospital of Altay gave his suggestion to a villager at Aweitan county of Altay in Xinjiang after a remote diagnosis through the platform.

The villager said that the telemedicine platform saved much time traveling between the village and the city and reduced costs of repeated examinations in different hospitals.

The platform was a result of the 5G internet plus wise medical project jointly developed by the Altay Municipal Health Commission and China Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom)'s branch in Xinjiang.

So far, medical resources in all areas of Altay are shared on the platform, making it much easier than before for patients to conveniently see doctors.

The project including construction of 44 1GbE broadband dedicated network cables and 22 100MbE videoconference systems, as well as applications on 5G smart phones and a cloud coordinated hierarchical medical platform on computers.

All clinics and medical institutes in the village, county and urban area can access the system to use the cloud platform, exchange and share medical data, carry out telemedicine activities and hold videoconferences.

In addition, the Altay Municipal Health Commission is capable of gathering disease information in the entire region and giving early alarms by sharing the data; it can also allocate medical resources.

It's worth mentioning that suspected patients of the COVID-19 can be traced quickly through the platform, which greatly improves the health department's work efficiency.

Since the commercial use of 5G internet China Telecom's branch in Xinjiang has been devoted to promoting innovative 5G-based medical applications among a limited number of medical workers and providing equipment to improve medical efficiency and diagnoses.

The efforts will help relieve difficulties in registration in hospitals and promote targeted poverty alleviation in remote areas.
