The extended Zhangjiakou Ningyuan Airport in North China's Hebei province, a key supporting infrastructure for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed and began service on Aug 3.
Invested and built by China Railway 18th Bureau Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, the expansion project involved construction of 11 buildings including the new terminal, an emergency rescue center and the control tower on an area of 28,000 square meters.
Moreover, the taxi lanes, an extended runway and the linking taxiways as well as supporting facilities like the visual navigation aids system and advanced air traffic control engineering were also included in the project.
The total coverage of the project was about 205,000 square meters with 14,000 square meters of area reserved for the Terminal building. Investment was about 1.3 billion yuan ($187.33million).
According to Li Hui, head of the project, there are now 14 aircraft stands and about 1 million passengers can be transported annually.
In addition to meeting traffic demands during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics the airport will live on after the event to play its role in promoting economic development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
There are 76 competition venues and supporting infrastructure projects in Zhangjiakou for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The total investment is roughly 32.8 billion yuan.
So far, more than 50 projects have been completed and the others are scheduled to be finished and meet requirements of test events within this year.
