The world's first special tunneling boring machine (TBM) for lengthy and steeply inclined shaft coal mine shafts was completed on August 3, 2015.

Jointly developed by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited and China Shenhua Group, the TBM has complete proprietary intellectual property rights.

The 238-meter machine has an excavation diameter of 7.62 meters and weighs more than 1,200 tons. It can carry out various missions including excavation, lining, deslagging, transportation, ventilating and draining during inclined shaft engineering.

Its development was the first application of a TBM participating in coal mine shaft engineering and marked China's progress in cooperative innovation in large-scale high-end equipment manufacturing.
