The Linhe-Baigeda section of the Beijing-Urumqi Expressway opens on July 15, 2017
The Linhe-Baigeda section of the Beijing-Urumqi Expressway, the world's longest desert highway section with the highest elevation, opened on July 15, 2017.
Stretching 930 kilometers, the section was built by three Chinese central SOEs, namely China State Construction Engineering Corporation, China Railway Group Limited and China Communications Construction Company Limited.
The section, linking Bayannur League in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to Alxa League on the border between Inner Mongolia and Gansu province, runs through three deserts - the Ulan Buh, the Tengri and the Badain Jaran. Nearly 500 kilometers of the highway are in depopulated zones.
The completion of the section ended construction of the Beijing-Urumqi Expressway, shortening the journey from Beijing to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region by nearly 1,300 kilometers.
